Miura Has the Best Iced Coffee Recipe for Work From Home

3 min read

In our One Great Thing series we highlight the best style, beauty and home stuff—found, tested and obsessed over by us. Here, the at-home iced coffee innovation that is now part of Lara Buchar’s daily routine.

A year into the pandemic, there are few things that make me excited to get out of bed in the morning. That is, until I tried Flash Chilled Coffee on tap, a new bulk format from Toronto-based coffee purveyor Miura. I was skeptical at first (why would I need iced coffee “on tap” at home, where all beverages are essentially on tap?) but I was quickly proven wrong. Here’s why.

The convenience

The coffee comes in a sealed 3-litre box with a tap (kind of like boxed wine), which keeps it fresh for up to two weeks in the fridge, unlike other iced coffee you can buy in bottles from the grocery store. Despite holding 16 cups of coffee, it still fits nicely into my narrow apartment-sized fridge and rings in at a somewhat reasonable $35.99. That said, when I’m rushing to my WFH desk at 8:59 a.m. to join my morning Slack meeting, being able to pour myself a really good coffee in 20 seconds is priceless.

The taste

I’ve attempted to make iced coffee at home several times throughout the pandemic, and it never holds up to the frosty cups I would pick up from the barista on my way to work. I had written it off as a pre-pandemic ritual that I just couldn’t recapture at home, until I tried Miura. It uses the Japanese technique of brewing coffee and then chilling it rapidly, locking in the flavours and aromatics for a more complex flavour profile. I can’t pretend to be a coffee connoisseur but I do enjoy a smooth, drinkable cup of iced coffee, and this one hits just right. Plus, fixing it at home means you can get the size, milk and sugar exactly how you like it.

The novelty

I’ll admit, the novelty of coffee on tap is part of the appeal—I feel instantly transported back to pre-pandemic coworking spaces, where the gleaming shared kitchens always seemed to have an endless supply of iced coffee on tap. It’s a small window into the way we used to live, and even though it’s slightly frivolous, the luxury of it has me hopping out of bed and skipping all the way to the kitchen—even on Monday mornings. If that’s not worth $35, I don’t know what is.
